Moving to Colorado
February 28, 2008
I wrote about this on my personal blog this morning, but it’s definitely appropriate to discuss here on All Climbing. This summer my wife and I will be moving to the Boulder area of Colorado. I say Boulder “area” because we’re not exactly sure where we’ll end up finding real estate we like, but the goal is to be within a 30 minute drive of Boulder for primarily business reasons (also discussed in the post on my other blog).
I’ll be visiting Boulder and Denver next week to start getting a better feel for the different areas to live and hopefully get some climbing in (Saturday looks to be sunny and low 60’s!)
I expect to be living there by early summer, but it will all depend on selling our house here and finding a new place to live out there.
I look forward to continuing my blogging on climbing with even more reporting on cool happenings as I’ll be much more near a climbing epicenter.

New research says have a beer after your next workout
February 21, 2008
I’ve been known to have a beer or two after climbing, so it’s encouraging to read that I may not necessarily be hurting my fitness.
New research suggests that beer may be a decent source of hydration after a workout.
Researchers from Granada University in Spain published results from a recent study that tested the hydration powers of water versus beer, and a results were surprising.
After students performed strenuous exercise until exhaustion in 104 degree Fahrenheit temperatures, one group was given two pints of beer while the other group drank the same amount of water. Both groups were then allowed to drink as much water as they wanted and their hydration levels were tested soon after. The tests revealed a slightly better measurement in the beer drinkers than those who drank water. Surprising? According to common principles of nutrition, this finding may be scientifically grounded.
Ok, so maybe beer is not the best solution, but knowing it may help you is still good news to me!

Review of the climbing film Spray
February 13, 2008
From the diary of a [newbie] rock climber, we get a great review of the premier of Spray:
one thing that will strike you about this movie is the emphasized pairing of music with climbing problems. at times you feel like you are watching segmented 4 minute music videos. the pairings work mostly. there were times however when i wished i could just hear the ocean and nothing else. someone should compile a cd of the movie’s tracks though. the songs would make for a great climbing road trip album.
my one criticism of the film is that i wish it had taken more risks with its story lines. i also wanted lindner and especially kinder to be complex characters. at one point lindner starts talking about how his father broke his back trad climbing and how that influenced chris’s decision to focus on sport climbing. i was intrigued by the possibility of this narrative but was a bit disappointed by its cursory treatment. similarly, i wish joe had been a bit more vulnerable and raw in his conversations. he gets close to this point when talking about how chris sharma inspired him by climbing surf safari (5.14) at age 14 but the exposure is brief. i guess i was hoping for a little less spray.
I haven’t seen the film yet. Anyone else have thoughts on Spray?

Happy belated 3 year anniversary to the All Climbing blog
February 1, 2008
I started writing All Climbing in January of 2005. At the time there were few, if any, actual climbing blogs. I don’t think any of those in existence back then are still writing. So, while it has been a lot of hard work, I’m proud to say All Climbing is still alive, kicking, and one of longest running climbing blogs. Now, whether it’s the best is an entirely different question
I love the fact that there are so many new blogs out there written by climbers. It’s an exciting time to be a climber using the Internet, now that there are more options than just RockClimbing.com and static websites of climbers (as was the case three years ago).
One of the aspects of writing for this blog is trying to provide content that my readers find interesting and relevant. I’d like to hear your thoughts as often as possible though. Please leave a comment letting me know what types of blog posts you’d like to see or any other thoughts / opinions you may have.
