How to Succeed on Winter Alpine Routes

by Tom Markiewicz on February 10, 2009

Ade Miller offers some tips on how to succeed on winter alpine routes.

Rehearse the climb. If you’re trying do a winter ascent of a line that climbs a summer route then climb the route in summer at least once. Getting off route in winter will waste time and saps your momentum. I’ve failed more than once after a slowing of upward movement turned into full blown retreat.

if i wanted to do a winter ascent of a route that could be climbed in the summer, I’d probably just wait until the summer.

BJ, yeah, I was wondering if someone would comment on that one. All of the tips in the article are good, but the one I quoted seemed intriguing. I guess from a descent point of view it makes sense, but I’m likely not inclined to do the route twice!
