Review of Pure, a Bouldering Film by Chuck Fryberger

by Tom Markiewicz on February 22, 2009

Friday night I attended the world premier of Pure in Boulder. After watching the trailer and speaking with the filmmaker, Chuck Fryberger, I was highly anticipating Pure. I still had some apprehension though. As more climbing films are released, I’m starting to get the feeling climbers are becoming jaded. How many more ways are there [...]

Behind the Scenes at ABS Nationals

by Tom Markiewicz on February 17, 2009

This past Friday I had the opportunity to volunteer at the ABS Nationals. I’m not sure how they picked people for the various positions (pretty sure it was random), but I ended up being the judge for the first problem in the men’s open qualifiers. I mainly wanted to volunteer for two reasons. First, I [...]

Bouldering in Morrison, Colorado

by Tom Markiewicz on December 16, 2008

A few weeks ago, I had a chance to check out the bouldering at Morrison in Colorado. It was an unusually gray and cloudy day, so I didn’t get many pictures, but I did want to write up my mini summary of the area. First off, Morrison is the kind of bouldering area where you [...]

Lynn Hill has sent Chablanke (V11/V12) in Hueco Tanks, Texas making this the 7th female ascent of the problem. While it’s always to great to hear about strong sends from young(er) climbers, I’m always most impressed with news from climbers past the age of 40. I suppose it’s because as I get older I gain [...]

by Tom Markiewicz on October 31, 2008

Recently I had a brief Twitter discussion with @WasatchGirl who is currently on an extended climbing trip. She was in Boone and wondering if there was any printed guidebook available. From my last visit I didn’t think there was any, but I did remember a few resources online that I had bookmarked. Unfortunately, I couldn’t [...]

Bouldering Colorado Slideshow with Bob Horan

by Tom Markiewicz on October 3, 2008

Neptune Mountaineering in Boulder hosted a slideshow last night presented by Bob Horan, author of the new and highly controversial guidebook Bouldering Colorado. Honestly, I was hoping some of the book’s most vocal detractors would show up for an open debate (hopefully more entertaining than the VP debate happening simultaneously), but there was a relatively [...]
