Sonnie Trotter getting the third ascent of Master Blaster (5.13c/d) in Zion National Park. From Trotter:

The climb was first freed by Seattle bad ass Ben Gilkinson, and Lauren Lee and I made the Second and Third ascents, back to back. It was a great experience because the exposure was stunning, but the cracks size, forced me to learn ring locks in a roof. It was likely the most painful experience I’ve had on a rope, but the line was so clean and steep I just had to suck it up.

How Black Diamond Creates Carabiners

I always find articles and videos on how climbing gear is constructed quite fascinating. A couple months ago I posted a video on how DMM makes carabiners and now Backcountry.com has written an article on Black Diamond‘s process of making carabiners from start to finish.

“Whenever you design something, it starts with a need,” says Bill Belcourt, BD’s Climbing Hardgoods Category Director. The BD carabiner that eventually ends up on a climber’s rack begins as a brainstorming session or a simply sketched idea in the design department. Product designers determine what they want the carabiner to do and look like, and from there, they design computer models. Before they physically make anything, the design team uses FEA (Finite Element Analysis), which helps determine the shapes, angles, and features needed to fulfill the company’s strength requirements.

Construction of a Climbing Gym

I’m not sure how many climbing gyms one town needs, but Boulder is closing in on getting its fourth gym called Movement. For a city with a population of roughly 90,000, this seems like a lot even for Boulder’s high concentration of climbers. Regardless, I’m more than happy to have additional choices.

The Movement gym’s blog has an update on the ongoing construction and I thought it was interesting to take a brief behind the scenes look at a climbing gym being constructed.

Daniel Woods Bouldering in Red Rocks Video

Following up on the launch of DPM HDTV a couple weeks ago with two videos, Dead Point Magazine now has five on their site.

The most recent climbing video is Daniel Woods on Wet Dream and Abaddon in Red Rocks, Nevada filmed by Carlo Traversi.

The last two added were James Litz on the first ascent of Masterpiece (V13) in Joe’s Valley, Utah and the second ascent of Psychedelic (5.14d) in St. George, UT.

The videos aren’t embeddable, so head to the Dead Point Magazine web site to check them out.

All Climbing Creates Climbing Video Network

Most climbers absolutely love watching climbing videos on the web and climbing bloggers try to oblige by curating and promoting the best ones we find.

In order to make it even easier to find and watch great climbing videos, All Climbing has partnered with Force5 to create a video channel network on our site.

You can access the video area directly or from the navigation tab above.

After working with Force5 on the content channels and setup, I’m impressed so far with the video selection. I’m already finding many climbing videos I hadn’t seen before. The location tags for climbing areas have been particularly useful so far.

Dead Point Magazine Launches Climbing Videos in High Def

ClimbingNarc reports that Dead Point Magazine released its 4th issue and added a new feature to their site called DPM HDTV.

Currently there’s only two videos on the site, but they’re high quality and quite good. Hopefully Dead Point will continue to post more of these high quality videos on a regular basis.

How to Fit a Backpack

Gregory Mountain Products founder, Wayne Gregory, discusses how to fit a pack. In the video, Gregory states “people don’t buy packs to fit their bodies, they buy packs to dump their gear in.” He then proceeds to show the better way of fitting packs.

Rocky Mountain Highball Trailer

Back in February, I reviewed the climbing movie Pure. At that film’s premier in Boulder, the audience had the first glimpse of the upcoming film, Rocky Mountain Highball. At the time, I remember being very excited for the premier on April 27. I’m not 100% positive, but this latest trailer seems to be much longer with more footage of the actual climbs.

The filmmakers, Yama Studio, have now updated the web site for Rocky Mountain Highball. The new site has the trailer available for download as well as cast and crew details.

ClimbingNarc has also posted some detailed thoughts on the movie.
